Influence of Hypercholesterolemia on Deformability of Erythrocytes in Hyperglycemic Subjects

چکیده

Erythrocyte deformability can be defined as its ability to deform and squeeze through capillaries. It undergoes various shape transformations and adapt to flow in varying flow conditions / shear stress. Every red blood cell has a cytoskeleton, a sort of scaffolding made of protein molecules called spectrin, attached to the inside of its cell membrane in a brush-like network. When the bonds within that protein network or between the network and the cell membrane are broken, holes open up in the cytoskeleton, allowing the cell to become more fluidic and squeeze through narrow passages. The researchers show that such a transformation can be achieved by breaking either of two types of cytoskeletal bonds-bonds between two molecules of spectrin or bonds between spectrin and another protein called actin, which is embedded in the cell membrane. An input of either mechanical energy (such as squeezing or shearing) or chemical energy (such as ATP, an energy carrier used by cells), is enough to break those bonds and cause the necessary cytoskeleton deformation,

Influence of cholesterol on shape parameters of erythrocytes in hyperglycemic subjects.

OBJECTIVE We determined the morphological changes of erythrocytes in blood samples of diabetic patients with varying levels of hyperglycemia with normo- and hyper-cholesterol concentrations and compared them with cells of healthy subjects. METHODS The shape analysis was carried out by shape descriptors based on projected area, perimeter and form factor, as measured by the processing of erythr...

Changes in erythrocyte aggregation and deformability in diabetes mellitus: a brief review.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by varying or persistent hyperglycemia either due to insufficient production of insulin by pancreas or improper utilization of the glucose. Erythrocytes remain in hyperglycemic environment throughout their life span and thus are subjected to series of compositional changes, which in turn affect their flow properties through alteration...

In vivo influence of extract from Aronia melanocarpa on the erythrocyte membranes in patients with hypercholesterolemia

BACKGROUND Hypercholesterolemia increases cholesterol concentration in erythrocyte membranes, which results in decrease of membrane fluidity and decreases the deformability of red blood cells. The fruits of Arona melanocarpa contains many of polyphenols and other compounds that have beneficial health effects. MATERIAL/METHODS The aim of the study was to estimate the influence of 2-month suppl...

The relation between the erythrocyte nitric oxide and hemorheological parameters.

We stimulated human erythrocytes obtained from patients with hypercholesterolemia (HC; n = 42), renal transplantation (RT; n = 18) and hypertension (HT; n = 10) with acetylcholine (ACh 10 microM) and measured the amperometric NO production, comparing with the NO levels achieved on erythrocytes of healthy persons (n = 27). We also measured the hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocyte aggregation, ery...

Whole blood viscosity and erythrocyte 1 deformability are related to 2 endothelium - dependent vasodilation and 3 coronary risk in the elderly 4 The Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors

It has previously been shown that a high hemoglobin value, a major determinant of whole blood viscosity (WBV), 9 predicts cardiovascular events. One putative mechanism might be an impaired endothelial function. Erythrocyte deformability is 10 another rheologic feature of the erythrocyte being of importance for the flow properties of the blood, especially in the capillaries. 11 The present study...
